  • What grades does Kainos serve?
Currently, we accept students in grades 5-12.
  • Does Kainos only accept students who are Christian?
No. Kainos Microschool is a Christian faith based microschool, but we welcome children from diverse backgrounds and faiths. We will never force a student to participate in spiritual disciplines that make them uncomfortable and we strive to help them find the goodness in everything that is being taught. We encourage students to explore their faith and we strive to provide a safe atmosphere for students to ask questions about their beliefs. We do ask that families enrolled in Kainos to acknowledge that we teach from a biblical perspective and agree to respect those teachings.
  • How are students grouped?
Our classes are multiage classrooms. We learn with each other in a family style setting. When necessary, we might place students in small groups based on need or ability for specific activities or lessons.
  • How do you ensure students are learning what they need to learn in multiage classrooms?
Each student is placed in curriculum at their instructional level. By placing a student at the appropriate instructional level, students are able to progress at their own pace- slowing down and speeding up as needed. Students are not allowed to move to the next lesson without demonstrating mastery of the concept. Teachers act as one on one tutors to help remediate as needed.
  • Does Kainos accept School Choice Vouchers?
No. Unfortunately, School Choice Vouchers can only be used at accredited schools. However, we do accept ESA funds.
  • What type of documentation is required for enrollment at Kainos?
Upon enrollment at Kainos, we request a copy of the students birth certificate (or other legal document that clearly shows the students Date of Birth). This is at the suggestion of the IDOE to help protect children against trafficking. We do not require any other type of documentation for enrollment. You will not be required to submit immunization records or proof residency. We do ask parents to provide unofficial academic records prior to enrollment. Once a child is enrolled, we will request official academic records from your child's previous school.
  • Does Kainos accept students with special needs?
Yes and no. Our primary focus is on students in grades 5-12 who require a personalized education. These students often struggle in conventional academic environments but not always due to academic struggles. Typically, these students and families are seeking the adaptability of a microschool to accommodate their unique needs. While we cater to students with varying learning abilities, we are not capable of supporting those with severe physical or learning challenges.
  • My student has an IEP. Can we keep that IEP in place while enrolled at Kainos?
Yes! We have a great relationship with FWCS and SACS and we welcome their Special Education Consultants into our school to offer support, monitoring, and evaluations as needed. In addition, we can help you qualify for ESA funds if your child has qualified for an IEP. These funds can be used for tuition and other fees at Kainos. See Jill Haskins for more information.
  • What types of accommodations and modifications do you make for students with special needs.
We utilize a wide range of accommodations and modifications. Because each student is unique in their needs, we can truly tailor their learning to meet their needs. Some accommodations include the use of a calculator, speech to text/text to speech, extra time, reducing the number of problems, allowing movement or fidgets, etc. Most accommodations provided in an IEP are already accommodations we provide naturally in our programming.
  • Does Kainos accept ESA funds?
Yes! Kainos is an approved ESA school and we are happy to accept ESA funds.
  • My student is advanced and needs to be challenged. Will Kainos be able to do this?
Yes! We can move students as quickly or as slowly through curriculum as necessary. If your student is ready for higher level instruction, we will absolutely provide it. We have access to honors level courses and dual enrollment classes through Arizona State University. Students may begin higher level courses as soon as they are ready and do not have to wait until high school.
  • What do I do if I suspect that my student has a learning disability?
We are happy to talk with you to help you decide your next steps. If you decide that a formal evaluation is needed, we will connect you with the local public school district to start the evaluation process. We are also happy to attend case conferences and move in meetings with you.
  • Is Kainos Microschool an Accredited School?
No. Kainos has intentionally chosen not to pursue accreditation. This allows us the freedom to provide a completely personalized education in partnership with each student and their parents. Accreditation would place too many restrictions on our school to be able to meet the unique needs of each student.
  • How are students at Kainos Microschool classified?
Students who attend Kainos Microschool are enrolled in a non-accredited private school. This means that they fall under the homeschool classification.
  • Can a student graduate from Kainos and go to college?
Yes! Even though we are not an accredited school, our students can (and have) gone on to higher education successfully! Our students have found that they are well equipped for college academics. Students applying for college apply under the Homeschool Admissions process. Kainos will provide an official High School Transcript which has been accepted to multiple universities across the state of Indiana.
  • Does my student have to take standardized tests at Kainos?
No! Since we are a non-accredited private school, we do not have to participate in standardized/state testing. However, if your student is planning on attending college, they will need to take the SAT, ACT, or CLT to prove they are ready for higher education. We will help parents register for testing. Students who participate in the ESA program are required to take the state mandated test at the end of each school year. Kainos does not provide this testing. Testing can be done through a private testing center as instructed by the Department of Treasury.
  • What if my student wants to go back to public school?
If your child wants to go to public school anytime throughout 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade, they will be able to do so without any issue. However, if your student wants to transfer during high school, the public school is NOT required to accept credits earned through Kainos. This means that if your student transfers to public school in the middle of high school, he/she may lose the credits they have earned while at Kainos.
  • Does Kainos have an attendance policy?
Yes and no. We strive to be as flexible as possible and encourage families to make choices that are best for them. While we don't have a strict attendance policy, we will communicate with the parents when absences exceed more than 9 days. Excessive absences results in inconsistent learning and is detrimental to students. Excessive absences may also result in termination in enrollment at Kainos.
  • Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
Yes! We believe that family time is valuable and we are happy to accommodate family vacations. Please notify the classroom teacher at least 2 weeks in advance if your family is going to take time off for a vacation. We are happy to send work home if requested.
  • Does Kainos have E-Learning or Snow Make Up days?
Kainos is responsible for providing 180 days of instruction. Should we close due to a weather emergency, we will work with families to ensure that the work is made up. We do not have E-learning days, although we may send work home for an at home school day if inclement weather is expected.
  • How are students graded?
Typically we use the traditional A-F grading scale. However, we also track student progress and are happy to track mastery or progress instead of traditional grades. We will make these accommodations on a case by case basis in partnership with parents as necessary.
  • Will my student receive a report card and high school transcript?
Yes. Students will receive quarterly report cards and high school students will receive an official high school transcript upon their departure from Kainos.
  • Who is responsible for the record keeping of the students enrolled at Kainos?
Kainos Microshool is responsible for keeping accurate records of attendance as well as lesson plans. Kainos follows all compulsory requirements for non-accredited schools as required by the IDOE.
  • What is the parent's role while their students are enrolled in Kainos?
Parents play an important role in the success of their students while enrolled at Kainos. Parents know their children best and can provide valuable insight into how they learn best, and how we can meet their needs. We appreciate parent input and insight.
  • What is expected of parents?
We expect parents to play an active role in their child's education. This means parents will regularly communicate with Kainos about the educational and emotional needs of their child as needed. Parents are responsible for timely drop off and pick up, timely communication when their student will be tardy or absent, and timely payment of tuition.
  • Can a parent volunteer at Kainos?
Yes! We welcome all parents who would like to volunteer! Parents interested in volunteering must pass a background check and Kainos specific training with the Director.
